Provisions and Politics: Recipes
Honoring
First Lady Sarah Childress Polk
Wins National Cookbook Award
The McIlhenny
Company has announced that the Polk Home's cookbook, Provisions
and Politics, has been awarded national second prize in the
14th Annual Tabasco Community Cookbook Awards. Judges labeled the
cookbook, "historical and entertaining, seamlessly weaving
local culinary tradition with American history."
Provisions
and Politics was published in honor of Sarah Polk's 200th birthday,
in September, 2003. Sarah Polk was a tremendous influence on her
husband James K. Polk, his presidency, and our country. She in many
ways was before her time. Through Provisions and Politics,
the Polk Association honors Sarah Polk and sheds light on a woman
who made important contributions to American history.
Provisions
and Politics features 224 recipes. Divided into eight traditional
categories, it offers an eclectic mix of recipes that range from
tried and true southern favorites to contemporary cuisine. The 192-page
hardback book provides inspirational menus and historical vignettes
about the Polks' life in Tennessee and the nation's capital. The
book costs $25.95 and is available through the Polk Home and at
bookstores and gift shops throughout Middle Tennessee. Proceeds
from the cookbook benefit the James K. Polk Memorial Association,
a non-profit group dedicated to perpetuating the memory of the 11th
President of the United States. The Association operates and preserves
the ancestral home of President Polk.
