Coming Soon: “Sweet and Secure: Tennessee Sugar Chests”

There are few decorative furniture pieces that hail only from the South. The sugar chest is one. In the 19th century, sugar was a valuable commodity to be treasured, measured, and secured. Skilled craftsmen built sugar chests to house this sweetest of life’s staples. “Sweet and Secure: Tennessee Sugar Chests” will look at this important piece of furniture in 19th-century Southern food culture.  The exhibit will open on February 13 at Polk Presidential Hall.
